Haikou/Beijing, December 8, 2023. Volkswagen Group China and the People's Government of Hainan Province will consolidate and expand their existing cooperation on automotive industry and mobility projects, under a Framework Agreement signed during the 2023 World New Energy Vehicle Congress. Building on a positive exchange which began in 2019, this agreement further demonstrates the Group’s ongoing commitment to supporting the regional industrial and economic development of Hainan.

Dr. Liu Yunfeng, Executive Vice President of Volkswagen Group China, responsible for Corporate & JV Affairs, said: “As we accelerate our ‘In China, for China’ strategy, we are excited to embark on this new chapter of mutually-beneficial collaboration with Hainan Province, and together take advantage of the many opportunities provided by Hainan Free Trade Port. These include the wide range of mobility services, vocational education, and marketing projects covered by this agreement. Together with our partners, we look forward to playing a significant role in promoting the economic and industrial development of Hainan Province.”

Under the agreement, the Group and Hainan government will continue their collaborative efforts to implement the “dual-system” education model, building on their ongoing cooperation around the Volkswagen Academy China Hainan Center. This includes collaborations with local institutions to optimise professional talent development plans, enhance the capabilities of tutors at local automotive vocational colleges, and work towards the creation of a qualification certification system. In addition, Volkswagen Group China will support Haikou Technician College (Hainan/China) and other vocational colleges to participate in the Sino-German Advanced Vocational Education Project (SGAVE).

The Group also intends to launch a range of mobility services in a series of phases. During the initial phase, Volkswagen and its business partners plan to develop services based on the ID. series. The Group and its subsidiaries also intend to initiate pilot projects for clean energy and sequential charging services in Hainan.

Furthermore, based on a successful collaboration this year, Volkswagen Group China and China International Consumer Products Expo intend to establish a long-term strategic partnership where, in an initial phase, Hainan Province will support the Group to participate in the event between 2024 and 2026.

The Group is also seeking to leverage local facilities to host marketing and communication events in the province. There are also plans to strengthen cooperation with Hainan in areas such as product experiences and demonstrations and pilots of innovative business concepts.

Volkswagen Group has always been at the forefront of collaborative efforts with local partners across China to accelerate the development of the country’s auto industry. Through the exchange of technology, resources, and expertise, it is committed to collaborating closely with the Hainan government, bolstering the local economy and nurturing automotive talent, while contributing to an innovative mobility future.
