Tianjin/Beijing, November 13, 2020. Volkswagen Group China accelerates e-components production to prepare the company for the fast-growing demand of e-mobility. Today, Volkswagen Group China continued the forward in the e-mobility transformation with the start of the production of APP310, the first e-drive product powering MEB platform pure-electric ID. models in Volkswagen Automatic Transmission (Tianjin) Co., Ltd. (VWATJ). The first APP310 off the line also marks the 5 millionth high-quality product produced by VWATJ since 2014.
“With the start of production of the APP310 e-drive, we are strengthening our local e-components production capabilities and taking a step closer to achieving both our global e-strategy, and Group-wide carbon-neutrality by 2050.” said Dr. Stephan Wöllenstein, CEO of Volkswagen Group China. “ The ID.4 CROZZ and ID.4 X are the first models in China to be built using Tianjin’s APP310 e-drive. In addition to members of the ID. family, the APP310 e-drive will also be applied to other future Group models based on the MEB platform.”
VWATJ has been producing high-quality DSG transmissions for millions of Volkswagen Group China vehicles since 2014 and has played an instrumental role in the Group’s components localization efforts. Last year, the production of the e-components, APP290 e-drive and DQ400e hybrid transmissions started in VWATJ, which began the Group e-components localization in China.
Located in the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA), VWATJ has a strong workforce, with over 4,600 employees. Benefitting from strong government support and a welcoming business environment, VWATJ plays a leading role in fostering high-quality development of the automotive industry as well as promoting economic growth in Tianjin, and also supports the synergic development in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
As one of the leading production plants within the Volkswagen Group’s global network, VWATJ has adhered to the highest quality norms and technology levels of the Group. Furthermore, the plant is fully committed to a low carbon future and has implemented a wealth of environmentally efficient, cutting-edge technologies in its production, processes and services, to decrease the environmental footprint of all plant activities. Among the environmental projects are the optimization of the central water filtration system which saves roughly 3.000 tons of water per year and the air pollution control facilities which have eliminated 98 percent of the particulates. The factory’s onsite photovoltaic facilities produce around 1 million kWh of electricity by year, reducing the CO2-emissions by more than 870 tons. This is equivalent to the mass of CO2 absorbed by roughly 45,000 mature trees via photosynthesis each year. The further extension of current photovoltaic facilities is planned, and 21 MW more capacity will be built till end of 2021.
With the e-components production at full speed ahead at VWATJ, Volkswagen Group China will be able to provide Chinese customers with zero-emission driving, creating a more environmentally friendly and sustainable future for all.
