Shaping A Carbon-Neutral Future: Volkswagen Group China’s Vision for Decarbonisation

    • Volkswagen Group China presents lineup of 8 pure-electric models at 3rd CIIE
    • Vision of net carbon neutrality by 2050 through decarbonising entire life cycle
    • CEO Woellenstein: “We are taking a holistic approach – from supply chain through production, use and end of life.”
    • New corporate social responsibility initiative Green Belt addresses climate-related issues via China afforestation program over next 10 years

Shanghai, November 05, 2020. Volkswagen Group China is showcasing its vision for a low-carbon future with a lineup of 8 pure-electric models from three core Group brands – Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche – at the 3rd China International Import Expo (CIIE). “Shaping a carbon-neutral future is central to our group strategy. Together with our partners, we have committed ourselves to be a net carbon neutral company by 2050,” said Dr. Stephan Wöllenstein, CEO of Volkswagen Group China, “We therefore greatly welcome China’s new commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2060. For Volkswagen Group, it is not just about gearing up our e-portfolio, but also a matter of tackling decarbonisation holistically – from raw materials, through production, till end-of-life.”

As part of the Group’s commitment to further support China’s sustainable development, a new CSR initiative –  Green Belt  – has been outlined at the exhibition, promoting a better environment and ecosystem within the country. Rolling out from 2021 onwards, the Green Belt initiative will target 10 ecologically fragile locations in northern China over the next 10 years. The project intends to help address local environmental threats stemming from climate change and  improve local people’s lives by creating more job opportunities through an afforestation project. The area to be covered will roughly equal twice the size of Volkswagen Group China’s industrial footprint – or 40 million square meters. By 2031, Volkswagen Group’s Green Belt will extend from Inner Mongolia, through to Ningxia, Qinghai, Gansu and Xinjiang.

The Group is strengthening its drive for electrification in China through €15 billion in investments between 2020 and 2024, with the e-offensive being at the heart of Volkswagen’s strategy to reach its carbon-neutral goals.
As mass uptake of e-mobility will ultimately depend on battery range and charging infrastructure, the Group is also currently working closely with all partners in China to provide customers with ways to charge their e-vehicles, in easy and climate-friendly ways. CAMS, the Group’s joint venture with Star Charge, JAC and FAW, is offering private charging wall boxes, as well as a highly competitive network of public DC charging stations, to Chinese customers. The first CAMS “super-chargers” have already been installed at prime locations in Beijing, Chengdu and Shenzhen, with a total of 40 super-charging stations – by year end, 255 charging stations are planned across 16 cities, with a total of 1,800 dual-connector charging poles.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brand will play a key role in the Group’s e-mobility strategy and drive towards a carbon-neutral future, through the introduction of its ID. family, based on the electric-only MEB platform. Volkswagen showcased its first two China-specific production models for the ID. family at CIIE – FAW-Volkswagen’s ID.4 CROZZ and SAIC VOLKSWAGEN’s ID.4 X – which will enter the market in early 2021. These two pure-electric SUVs feature a new electronics architecture for a fully-digital experience with intelligent online services and advanced driving assistance systems. Volkswagen’s ID. family will grow to 8 models come 2023.

Audi is presenting 3 iconic electric cars — the locally-produced Audi e-tron, Audi e-tron Sportback and Audi Q4 e-tron concept — at CIIE. The three e-tron models demonstrate Audi’s strong commitment to a carbon-neutral future. As Audi is systematically transforming into a provider of premium electric mobility globally, Audi plans to offer 30 electrified vehicles by 2025, with 20 being fully electric. Several all-electric Audi models are to be produced for the Chinese market on the new PPE platform from 2024 onwards.

Under the theme of Soul, Electrified, Porsche is exhibiting the rear-wheel drive Taycan and Taycan 4S, which both showcase the beginning of a new era for Porsche, together with the 99X Electric, Porsche's first fully-electric open-wheeled racecar. The fun-filled interactive programs, along with the selective emission-free models on stage, highlight Porsche's innate racetrack DNA and the brand's commitment to zero carbon emissions from the racetrack to the road. Porsche aims to become the most sustainable premium sports car manufacturer in the world. By 2025, it is expected that half of all Porsche cars delivered will be electrified.
