Beijing, July 3, 2023 - Volkswagen Group China announced today to boost the development of its charging network and enhance customer experience in the market. Volkswagen Group China, together with FAW-Volkswagen, intend to inject an additional investment of approx. 800 million RMB into the charging joint venture CAMS. The transaction is subject to applicable regulatory (including merger control) approvals. Volkswagen Group China and CAMS also established a partnership with State Grid Smart Internet of Vehicles to pilot a sequential charging (V1G) project in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region to explore sustainable and more flexible charging solutions, while save costs for customers.

Ralf Brandstätter, Chairman and CEO of Volkswagen Group China, said: “Volkswagen Group China is pursuing a holistic electrification strategy. We not only offer our customers modern e-vehicles, we also ensure that the switch to electromobility is as convenient as possible. That is why we are investing in a nationwide charging network with our charging joint venture CAMS to continuously enhance customer experience, and make e-mobility comfortable and accessible to millions of people in China.”

Olaf Korzinovski, Executive Vice President of Volkswagen Group China, responsible for Components, Logistics and QA, and Chairman of CAMS, said: “We are actively exploring collaborations for new energy services and working closely with Chinese partners to pilot innovative charging solutions. Through these initiatives, we strive not only to offer high-quality, diversified charging options by also deliver tangible advantages to our customers.”

Since founded in 2019, CAMS has been making rapid progress in building high-quality charging infrastructure and developing innovative solutions in private, public, and destination charging. As of June 2023, the charging joint venture has built a network of 1,250 public charging stations and 10950 charging points in 180 cities serving more than 2 million registered users. By 2025, the Group plans to install 17,000 CAMS fast-charging points across the country.

Volkswagen Group China and partners are also committed to exploring sustainable, flexible and innovative charging products to meet the diversified and evolving needs of Chinese customers. Within the V1G project, intelligent remote control technology will be implemented to customize the power of the wallboxes based on the requirements of grid load adjustment. It will help to maintain a stable power grid by implementing strategies such as valley filling and peak load shaving to balance electricity supply and demand, enabling relevant customers to contribute to a sustainable grid while saving on charging costs at the same time. The project plans to invite 2,400 targeted electric vehicle users in the Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei regions for a preliminary trial from July 2023 to June 2024.

Volkswagen Group commits to advancing its electrification transformation in China and dedicates to exploring additional innovative charging solutions with CAMS, including high-power charging, integrated photovoltaic charging, energy storage, and robotic charging. Such advancements will offer an expanded array of options to customers, ensuring e-mobility becomes even more convenient, accessible, and sustainable.
