Volkswagen Group China advances e-mobility strategy with new NEV components

  • Plant in Tianjin produces the APP290 E-drive and the DQ400e Hybrid Transmission, both key components for locally produced NEV models
  • Dr. Stephan Wöllenstein: “The local production of NEV components is another step forward for Volkswagen Group China’s e-mobility strategy, further showcasing our intent to go fully electric.”

[Tianjin/Beijing, June 20, 2019] Volkswagen Group China is strengthening its e-mobility strate-gy, with the local production of two NEV products, the APP290 E-drive and the DQ400e Hybrid Transmission, at Volkswagen Automatic Transmission (Tianjin) Co., Ltd. (VWATJ). In the future, the plant will also produce NEV components for MEB, Volkswagen’s modular electric platform. The factory will also continue to produce high-quality DSG transmissions, as it has already done so for millions of Volkswagen Group China’s vehicles since 2014.

“Volkswagen Group China is striving to transform the face of mobility,” said Dr. Stephan Wöllen-stein, CEO of Volkswagen Group China. “The local production of NEV components is a key mile-stone for the Volkswagen Group’s e-mobility strategy, in which we are delivering upon our commitment to an all-electric future with state-of-the-art NEV products.”

The plant in Tianjin adheres to the highest quality norms and technology levels of the Volkswagen Group, relying on world-class production standards. It has been producing high-quality DSG transmissions since 2014, as the only Volkswagen DSG manufacturer in China to-gether with its sister plant in Dalian.

Now the Tianjin production facility will enter the next phase with its NEV components, for which a completely new hall was created. In the future, it will also produce NEV components for Volkswagen’s modular electric platform called MEB, which will have its start of production in Anting and Foshan at the end of 2020.

Located in the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA), the plant plays an im-portant role in the local economy and environment. The factory has a strong workforce, with over 4,600 skilled workers and is one of the top three employers in TEDA. It is a sustainable produc-tion facility, in order to ensure sustainability and environmental protection throughout the en-tire production process.

As for innovation and quality assurance, Volkswagen Automatic Transmission (Tianjin) Co., Ltd. uses some of the latest technologies in component production within Volkswagen Group China. It is a highly flexible production facility, able to build multiple types of Double Clutch Transmis-sions throughout the different assembly lines in the plant. At the same time, it is also a smart digital factory, employing machines to analyse data and processes to increase productivity and continually guarantee high precision and efficiency of their production capabilities.
