Strategy: Volkswagen, Audi and other brands want to expand electric product portfolio in China to over 30 models by the end of the decade

The Group’s presence at Auto Shanghai is another important milestone in the Volkswagen Group’s “in China, for China” strategy. It ties in with other strategic measures that address market-defining trends in China at an early stage and to significantly increase the speed of innovation locally.

To this end, Volkswagen will massively strengthen its local competencies not only for e-mobility, but also in the areas of digitalization and autonomous driving, including software and R&D. CARIAD China will upgrade its software experts to 1,200 to accelerate the digitization of vehicles in China. In addition, there are another ~2,000 additional young Chinese developers in the Volkswagen Anhui joint venture.

In order to become even more part of the Chinese development ecosystem and increase the speed of innovation, the Volkswagen Group is also relying on partnerships with local high-tech companies, such as the cooperation with Horizon Robotics announced in October 2022. Volkswagen Group China will thus increase the pace of innovation, technical localization and customer focus and play a leading role in the new era of Intelligent Connected Vehicles (ICV).
